For years we had been using OsCommerce to develop e-commerce websites.  When our developer suggested we switch to using Magento I hesitated becuase we were not as familiar with that platform.  However, it has proved to be a great decision. It has proved to be a good with search engines as well.  It gives you the ability to create custom Meta Data for each product and category.

One of the best features (I think) is the ability to launch multiple stores and manage them all through one admin area.  This allows you to create niches and target them.  Making your niche as specific as possible will help in terms of search engine optimization as well.
