Kangaroo Island Southern Australia
Oct 26th, 2009 by Lucy Katts

Kangaroo in both name and nature, this large island just 13 km (8 mi) off the South Australian mainland has remained relatively untouched for thousands of years; and as such is an unblemished microcosm of the vast red continent.

Towering cliffs protect the northern shores, giving way to more exposed sandy beaches in the south. Bushwalking is pretty compulsory, and trails meander across the national and conservation parks that cover a third of the island.

Wild koalas hug the trees and kangaroos hop down the streets. Isolated from the ravages of European diseases and introduced species that afflicted their near neighbours, the native animals and plants have flourished. Echidnas, platypuses, possums and penguins are all on the wildlife fanatic’s list.

In 1800, Captain Matthew Flinders was commissioned by the British Government to chart the southern coastline of Terra Australis in HMS Investigator. He first sighted this island in March 1802, came ashore and named it Kangaroo Island, after dining well on wild kangaroo meat.

Just weeks later he spotted a French ship on the horizon, under the command of Nicholas Baudin. Despite their two countries being at war, the two men were civil, exchanging ideas and even vital supplies. Baudin went on to map the south and west coastlines, leaving many French names in his wake: Ravine des Casoars, D’Estress Bay and Cape de Couedic, now home to a colony of New Zealand fur seals.

Experienced divers may discover one of the 50 or so wrecks that litter this rocky coastline. Following the earliest recorded shipwreck in 1847, the first lighthouse in South Australia was built at Cape Willoughby, and stands to this day 27 metres (89 ft) high and a healthy climb to the top.

Ferries landing at Penneshaw on the eastern tip make it a hotspot for tourists, but it is easy enough to get away into the wilds and delight in this well-preserved refuge.

How to Select a Feline Breed
Oct 26th, 2009 by Lucy Katts

Choosing is the most difficult task to consider is whether or not to adopt a mixed-breed cat, such as one from an animal shelter or a friend, or take one in that is purebred. In today’s world forty cat breeds are official by the national and international cat associations now. Some people, maybe you, believe they want to buy a purebred kitten or cat. Money has been dedicated (about $100 to $1000 for the rarer breeds), and feel that one or two cats have the characteristics that they are looking for.

For example, you may want a quiet cat. Persian or Himalayan cats are a great choice. Another person might want a more spunky cat. Outside where he could play with your solar powered garden lights. In this case the Siamese or Abysinnian is the cat of choice. It’s wonderful that you can almost predict what sort of temperament the cat will have when you opt for a purebred.

The majority simply go down to the closest animal shelter and select a kitten, and take it home, not really concerned about how it’s going to act, physique or nature. Most of the cats in America and yes across the planet are adopted with little or no money like that. So guess what? Globally, purebred cats are in the minority. But this is totally different from the dog population. One third to one half of all dogs are purebred. One more interesting thing to note is that dogs vary dramatically in size from breed to breed, whereas cats are all about the same size in any of breeds.

Sure, you’re going to get a cat, and it’s fine if you get a mixed-breed or a purebred, what things should you note to choose them? Realistically, let’s think this question through.

You probably already know that cats are euthanized by animal shelters weekly because there are too many of them than there are potential owners willing to give them new homes. Think about this tragedy, that comes about by the ignorance and irresponsibility of today’s cat owners who don’t neuter their pet. You know that there are many small pets in shelters at this moment who will be euthanized this week if they aren’t adopted. Shelter cats are not less intelligent that their purebred buddies, and probably just as healthy - if not more so. Look the other way and they mess with your solar powered garden lights, too! Yes, they’ll be just as cuddly and fun to own.

It sounds heavy, but can you just choose a purebred cat knowing that so many common breeds are really needing a home? It’s a fact that the number of purebred cats sold annually is a fraction of the amount of mixed breeds put to sleep in the same time period. Purebreds will find a home easily and aren’t in jeopardy of losing their lives simply because of supply and demand.

OK, your turn…a decision that’s hard to make. Realistically, the thoughtful potential owner shouldn’t be overly worried about this dilemma. It goes back to the cat owner who if responsible the population explosion problem would soon be resolved. Enough about the drama, you probably want to know what are their differences?

Cost is huge, know that the cost of the cat can affect your choice. Mixed breeds are almost always free most of the time. The owner is probably thankful you took the kitten off of their hands. But if you go to a shelter, so realize that there is a $25 to $50 fee to cover the neutering and vaccines. Better yet, they will give you a lot of free tips on the cat. It’s a pretty good deal.

Purebreds are different. A bundle of energy, they’ll still snag your solar landscape lights, but you get the price you put into them and the rarer, the cost is more. As with dogs, registered cats cost even more. Take the American shorthaired cat, which might sell for $200, and then the Sphynx could be as much as $2000. Don’t forget checkups and annual vaccines. Food and litter as well. And the trip to the Vet to neuter, that can run around $75. A few of the many certain unavoidable costs involved with owning your new cat.

Review: Paranormal Agency
Oct 26th, 2009 by Lucy Katts

Paranormal Agency is a typical hidden object game. In Paranormal Agency, the hidden objects can come in the form of outlines to match, words, or a theme.  The themes can be anything from light sources to ghosts.

The game does not offer all the bells and whistles of the fancier games. It does offer a basic hidden object game without taking up a lot of memory.

The game begins by Heather Williams calling a paranormal specialist. Apparently, a child has been taken by a ghost. The investigator comes and after the first hidden object search, the investigator says the child is still there. A few searches later, and the child is found and Heather Williams is left with a piece of the ghost. She now has ESP and starts a career in paranormal science. Years pass and the investigator dies. The investigator left his business to Heather. Now she is searching on her own.

Paranormal Agency is supposed to take you on a spooky adventure. Unfortunately, it falls flat. While the graphics are good, they fall short of being scary or even creepy. The dialogue lacks appeal.  Luckily you can skip the dialogue. The game play isn’t bad though. If you are looking for a straight forward hidden object game, this will be right up your alley.

Each scene has you searching for a different amount of hidden objects. Like many hidden object games, the list contains about 5 items at a time. When you find one item, the item disappears from the list and new ones appear until you are down to the last few items. This game has one of my favorite features: the disappearing item. I like it when a game has the item disappear after you find it. I find it makes searching easier because it decreases the clutter.

You can find Paranormal Agency at Marco Polo Games. You can try the game for an hour for free. It won’t take you long to find a hidden object game that is perfect for you at Marco Polo Games.
