How You Should Select a Starter Guitar
Nov 3rd, 2009 by Lucy Katts

I can’t tell you how many individuals decide to learn to play the guitar, but get discouraged, and sometimes even stop, simply because they picked the wrong type of guitar to learn on. If only they had selected the right guitar for a beginner, they would be enjoying playing today. One of the reasons guitar players are tempted to give up is because they have a guitar with hard action. The best guitar learning software won’t help if the learner doesn’t want to practice.

Many people stop practicing because it becomes too painful, because they selected a guitar that has a hard or heavy action. This means it is simply too hard to push the string down to the fretboard, in order to make a chord. This makes the fingers so sore that it hurts to practice. A small amount of soreness is normal until calluses are built up on the ends of the fingers. But too much soreness discourages good practice habits. The best way to learn guitar is to use a classical guitar or an electric. The classical guitar has a lighter action because it uses nylon strings instead of steel, and the electric guitar uses strings that are smaller in diameter, and therefore easier to play.

One other advantage that the classical guitar has is that it has a wider neck, which makes it easier to learn to chord without the fingers getting in each others way. If you have small hands, however, the electric would be better, as it has a much narrower neck. Keeping these guidelines in mind will encourage beginning guitar students to get off to a good start and learn guitar fast.

Riyadh’s 3 Side Trips You Can’t Miss
Nov 3rd, 2009 by Lucy Katts

The land of a thousand and one fables and fantasies, impenetrable Saudi Arabia has long intrigued the world. As the country begins to relax its visa rules to welcome visitors, we share with you here three tasting of the middle east, side trip journeys reachable from Riyadh, its capital city.

The Asir Mountains. This hilly region is near the country’s border with Yemen. The local capital, Abha, a small town ringed by misty mountains, felt chilly as I strolled through its souk and chatted with stall holders selling incense of frankincense and myrrh, beads, gowns and brightly colored baskets.

The key attraction here is the restored village of Rijal Alma. Its tall, tower-like houses were built nearly 300 years ago, acting as watchtowers. One house is now a museum with rooms and displaying jewellery, farm tools and even a bridal carriage designed to go on a camel’s back.

Medain Saleh. Medain Saleh is the country’s key tourist attraction. Located in the north-west, the 2,000-year-old Nabataean tombs, set in the stark desert, are a stunning sight. Imagine visiting the rock-cut architecture of Petra, in Jordan, but without the crowds. This was the second city of the Nabataeans, who created their 131 rock-cut tombs soon after they had finished work on Petra.

The Nabataeans, whose empire lasted from around 600 BC to AD 300, sited both cities on the same trade route and Medain Saleh would once have been a bustling city, though as in Dir’aiyah, the houses have long disappeared. The tombs are astonishing - many are cut so high in the rock that you have to climb a rickety ladder to enter them to see the burial niches cut into the sandstone.

Many tombs have inscriptions in the Aramaic language over their doors and these are translated into English, explaining who owned the tomb. One of the most striking is the beautiful row of tombs called Qasr Al-Bint. You can also head across the dunes to the tomb of Qasr Farid, when it turns a glowing pink at sunset.

Jeddah. Souk Al-Alawi is the star attraction here, a warren of narrow streets in the old town where I spent a happy morning shopping for leather slippers and beautiful wool shawls. The prices are fixed, so haggling is not welcome, but generally, the atmosphere in Jeddah is far more relaxed than in conservative Riyadh. Here, I spotted women going out without men accompanying them, and sometimes without wearing their headscarves.

We finished our trip with a superb supper of prawn and hamour, a fish caught locally, at the Al-Nakhil restaurant on the Corniche. After supper, we all enjoyed smoking the apple-flavored shisha water pipes and soaking up the atmosphere of this buzzy restaurant, where families dine and chat until 3am in the morning.

Avatar Movie From Cameron Set To Break Box Office Records?
Nov 3rd, 2009 by Lucy Katts

Coming to a 3-D cinema screen near you this December is the hugely anticipated release of Jim Cameron’s budget busting offering, Avatar. Movie buffs have reported that over $300 million has been spent on this film although that might just be a rumour. It’s well over 200 million anyway.

24 minutes of this epic sci-fi adventure were recently screened at the cinema expo in Amsterdam which led to many of Cameron’s fans waxing lyrical over the upcoming movie. Up until this screening the only sneak previews we had were the (played to death) trailer and various grainy clips leaked from the production team.

The movie has a whole host of stars including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald. CGI has also been used throughout to excellent effect. Even though you know it’s CGI these freakish looking creatures do seem very real. You soon forget that you’re watching computer-generated images.

Some have even gone so far as to call this the most important movie of all time which is probably taking things a little bit too far. What about Little Voice? I digress. It’s certainly looking like one of the most expensive movies of all time anyway but it’s bound to break box office records with all the buzz flying around the Internet.

The movie follows an ex-marine who ends up on an alien planet populated with these slightly scary looking blue creatures. Hostilities abound and the ex-Marine becomes an avatar. A human mind inside of the alien body. As the story develops he has increasing trouble deciding between who to trust and who to save.

If you’re into your science fiction this one is a must see! You can check out the trailer for the Avatar movie which is due to hit our screens on 18 December.
