Healthy eating - or at least healthier eating - has become a trend. And rightly so. Our civilized societies are aging, with about a third of the population in the US and Europe above the age of 55. As middle-aged and elderly people steadily increase in numbers so are the incidences of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, chronic back pain, indigestion, cancer and heart disease, to name but a few. With medical treatments being expensive, many turn to a healthier diet in hope of relieving symptoms or preventing disease altogether.

There are many ways to have healthy eating habits, and thus health and overall wellbeing, can easily be improved. Animal fat and sugar are two culprits to keep an eye on, and moderation is the key. Your body needs fats as well as sugars, but eaten in excess they lead to diabetes, overweight and clogged arteries.

A healthier diet includes enough fruits, nuts and vegetables that provide the vitamins and minerals as well as natural sugars the body needs to function well and stay healthy. Protein is needed for its role in repair and maintenance, but protein derived from animal meat should be eaten in moderation because of its high saturated fat content. Instead, plant protein such as found in soy and other legumes are healthy alternative protein sources.

Salt is another common ingredient that is frequently used in excess, which can contribute to high blood pressure. Therefore, watch how much salt you use, and especially keep an eye on hidden salt in ready-made foods.

As stated before, the keyword is moderation. No extreme diet is healthy, instead aim to cut out some unhealthy foods and replace them with healthier alternatives, such as fruits, whole grain bread, and vegetarian meals. The benefits of a healthier diet will be more energy and alertness for your daily activities, weight loss, and a lowered risk of becoming chronically ill.
