Wrongful Death And Advanced Prostate Cancer
Jan 28th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

Physicians generally use a blood test, referred to as the PSA test, to screen men with no symptoms for prostate cancer.  Physicians generally agree that high PSA levels require a need to let the patient know he may have cancer and to either refer the patient to a specialist or follow up with diagnostic testing to rule out prostate cancer.  Yet, delayed diagnosis of prostate cancer cases occur all too frequently.

Consider the following reported cases.  In the first reported case, a doctor help off for two years after consecutive high PSA test results prior to telling the man that the patient might have cancer.  By the time the man was diagnosed he already had advanced prostate cancer.  The law firm that represented this man reported they were able to settle the lawsuit for $600,000 on the man’s behalf.  In the second reported case, a doctor waited 16 months, with three consecutive high PSA readings, prior to letting the patient know, a sixty-four year old man.  Prior to that the doctor had actually told the man that the results were normal for a man his age.  The result: the cancer had already reached the man’s seminal vesicles. The law firm that handled this claim was able to report a settlement of $1,500,000 on the man’s behalf.

As these two cases illustrate, if a doctor does not follow up on an abnormal result from a cancer screening test and the patient’s cancer spreads during the delay caused by the physician, a cancer lawyer can help you figure out whether that doctor is liable for malpractice.  In the worst case situation, a wrongful death attorney can help the patient’s family determine whether they may have a claim for wrongful death.  The above should not be considered medical or legal advice.  You should always consult with a doctor before taking medical advice or making a medical decision.  And always consult with an attorney concerning any potential legal matter.

New Treatments for Manic Depression Coming Soon
Jan 28th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

People suffering from manic depression go through continuous bouts of mania and depression that affects them their entire life.

The cause of bipolar 1 disorder disease has been the focus of many studies but scientist may finally be getting closer to the crux of the problem.

Can gene study lead researchers to discover the cause of manic depression? Some researchers seem to think so as a recent study points to two genes that seem as though they may play a central part in determining a person’s risk for developing manic depression.

If true, the importance of the discovery may lead to a whole host of new and better treatments to combat the disorder.

The 2 genes that are causing all of the signs and symptoms of manic depression are the ANK3 gene and the CACNA1C gene. The ANK3 gene is located on chromosome 10 at position q21. The CACNA1C gene is important in the production of the calcium channels which can be found in many of the body’s cells and are especially critical to the functioning of the heart and brain cells.

Moreover, it’s known that the proteins created by these genes indirectly influences the activity in the nerve cells of the brain by controlling the flow of sodium and calcium in the brain.

And now, after having discovered the specific genes responsible for bipolar disorder, they can begin to work on treatments that target the gene directly.

Find Independence Using Mobility Devices
Jan 27th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

Foundation

Mobility – it is only essentially workable to realize what mobility implies if your ability to move around freely might be degraded, then it takes on a complete new meaning. Coping with a loved one who is partially disabled provides me with an insight into the kind of complications that people with physical challenges have to deal with. When you are in condition enough and sure footed there isn’t any true perception in the disadvantage of not having full mobility of your person. Regardless of which nobody will be particularly concerned unless it has to do with them themselves.

Many of us take it totally for granted when everything works as it ought to and we get on with living our lives concentrating on making money, raising a family, having a good time and other such normal everyday things. Believe it or not quite often you never even like to look at those who are disabled and only just coping because it makes us aware of our own vulnerability which reminds us of our mortality. Next time you see anyone who’s in a wheel chair, realize your own reaction to that person, and be aware of how your family evade eye contact and carefully get out of the way. Those that use wheelchairs in some cases state how folks they speak to will talk to the carer and ignore them as if they are stupid in addition deaf.

Early Disability Aids

The first type of disability aid that most people will be familiar with is the walking stick. For some, it will be something to make them feel more steady on their feet when they suffer some impairment in walking. If a person has a broken leg or hip then crutches for a period of time will be needed and later a stick until full mobility returns. When I broke my hip I found the most frustrating thing was that I could not carry a cup of tea from one place to another so I improvised with a trolley on wheels which I could push along. When you have to use two arm crutches as I did to get about, there are no arms left to carry anything. For non spilling things you can use a bag to carry your things in which can be attached to your crutches, but not cups of liquid. Recently when visiting my husband in hospital I watched while the nurses unpacked a Zimmer frame on which they attached a plastic box with a tray for a lid. It was fixed like a basket on a bike. The patient had to practice pushing it along, and I realised it was because he lived on his own and needed to be able to transport things but couldn’t manage without two handed support. These types of early aids are common for people as they get older and lose their youthful mobility because of age related difficulties. They are additionally required for those who have sustained accidents and injuries so that temporary mobility is impacted.

Freedom

One of the major frustrations for people becoming disabled is their loss of independence and freedom to be able to do what they want, when they want. If a person becomes disabled after years of normal living and independence there will be a great deal of  anger and a need to make adjustments to the new situation. However, whatever the disability experienced there are a vast range of aids to help people live as independent a life as possible.

Loss of mobility is a serious aggravation for customers suddenly suffering from disability and a mobility scooter can help to conquer this restraint.

In the Home

When suffering loss of mobility or normal functioning whatever the reason, the first task is to create safety and functionality in the home where the level of disability determines the type of support needed.

One of the first things to consider is the degree of comfort while resting. Correct support in bed and while sitting in a chair will allow the muscles to relax properly so that the body will function as well as possible. There are a range of Orthopaedic beds which allow for many different positions from lying to sitting and the best examples are the hospital beds where you will find electronic buttons to change the position of a patient with ease. Chairs can also be found that will allow for different positions and even a vibrating and massaging function incorporated into the frame. A friend of mine had a chair specially made which reclines, vibrates and massages in three different places and also tips forward when you want to get out for ease of standing up. When we visit all of us want to have a go in it because it is such good entertainment.

The next trial when disabled, is the function of toilet, bathing and dressing. There are a huge range of aids to chose from such as commodes and other toilet necessities, grab rails for showers and baths. My mother is severely arthritic and cannot get into the bath anymore, so she has a seat which lowers and raises her in and out of the bath. There are also walk in baths and then specially adapted showers with stools and slip mats to aid the sufferer. Also as my mother is partially sighted she is unable to see the numbers anymore, so she has a set of talking weighing scales.

Having managed the getting up, washing and dressing as well as maybe a good rest in the special chair, moving around the home will be next on the agenda. Depending of the level of incapacity it might be that a simple walking stick or Zimmer frame will support mobility. As well as grab handles in the bathroom, handles can be mounted alongside entrance doors and steps to help with negotiating different levels. Just because people suffer some sort of disability it doesn’t mean that they want to leave their homes, but when they live in a house and have stairs to negotiate then the use of a stair lift is a wonderful invention. Severely disabled people may need a wheelchair in the house which requires plenty of square footage and potentially expanded doorways for it.

The next activity for independent living is food preparation and dining. Standing can be a problem so a high stool to perch on might a boon. Otherwise do as much preparation as possible sitting at the kitchen/dining table. If a person has a problem with holding cutlery and kitchen utensils, there are specially adapted items with larger handles for ease of use. With arthritis in the wrists, lifting items such as kettles and saucepans can be a problem, but there are available cleverly designed kettle and teapot tippers for ease of pouring. Using a food processer and electric gadgets will save a great deal of time and effort when preparing meals. Another simple aid which my mother found very useful is a grabbing stick or ‘Reacher’ that picks up items to save bending down.

For the latest deals on the 3 wheel mobility scooter research on line and check on comparative deals.

Maintaining the home is sometimes difficult for a disabled person. Obviously there are washing machines, dryers and dishwasher to aid with tasks in the home but you can also get remote control vacuum cleaners that are radio controlled with a joystick or key pad such as for toy boats and aeroplanes. Long handled brushes and dusters help with hard to reach corners particularly the microfiber dusters that attract dirt and dust to them.

Other items available for people who experience some level of limitation may be lever type handles for taps to make them easier to use. If a person has lost their grip there are special items to open cans, bottles and jars. Because my mother is partially sighted she has large buttons on her telephone and speed dialling so she can stay in touch with her family who are spread far and wide. She can order goods by phone which means with such aids she is able to retain her independence and stay in her own home. It seems that whatever the disability there is some clever invention to help overcome the problem.

Outside the Home

To enable a person who is disabled to live as normal a life as possible then aids outside the home are just as important as those inside. Wearing an alarm cord around the neck is a wise precaution so that if a person does get into difficulties while outside they can call for help. To be able to move around easily outside may only require a walking stick or a Zimmer frame for support but where mobility is more restricted, wheelchairs or electric scooters may be necessary. My mother used to love to garden but now the arthritis and osteoporosis has taken hold and her eyesight is impaired, she is severely limited in any activity outside. On a good day however she does have a garden stool which enables her to do some weeding and tidying of the flower beds. There are even wheeled seats for moving along the edge of flower beds when weeding. Long handled garden items can be used to avoid bending or kneeling and raised beds will allow even wheel chair users to tackle the garden plot. Ramps may be installed to allow a wheelchair to move from one level to another, and sit-on lawn mowers are a possibility if you have a big enough lawn.

There is a relatively new product on the market called Flexiloc which is a modular system of tough polyurethane tiles that interlocks to form ramps of any size. It has the advantage of being able to run straight, turn corners, be used indoors or outdoors and has a good grip surface that is more comfortable than conventional surfaces. It can be used as a temporary solution where a permanent ramp is unsuitable and is easily dismantled to be reused again and again.

If a disabled person relies on a wheelchair then automatic gates and garage doors which open remotely is a big help. Cars or vans used for transporting electric scooters are usually specially modified vehicles with ramps or lifts to allow the mobility scooter to be loaded up. Sometime cars may have to be adapted to allow for the lack of functioning of particular limbs. My husband cannot manage the foot pedal movement required for gear changing so we have switched to an automatic car to enable him to still drive.

When looking online for medical mobility scooterproducts you will find sites selling the various versions but be sure to purchase from a supplier with the most years of knowledge.

There is a huge range of mobility scooters available both new and second hand. The mobility scooter is mostly a four wheeled vehicle which travels between four and eight miles an hour. However for the electric scooter there seems to be more three wheeled versions which travel at a maximum of six miles per hour. The speed is determined on the weather, the terrain and riders weight. A three wheeled scooter is inherently less stable and unless greater manoeuvrability is required it is better to get the four wheeled variety. Some scooters can be completely folded up to go into the boot of a car. The scooter usually has a chair with arms mounted over the battery enclosure with handlebars like a bike for turning and controls in reach of the hands. They are very easy to operate and comfortable to ride. The chairs vary with the amount of padding and enclosed back, usually the more expensive the more padding there is.

As well as the open versions of mobility scooters there are enclosed ones to protect the passenger from rain and wind. These come with lights, windscreen wipers, full suspension, mirrors and lockable doors as with a car and can cover larger distances. I have seen them in my local area travelling along the road rather than on the pavement.

Home Remote Controls

Where an individual is physically unable to get about inside or outside the home the use of remote controls is a valuable aid. Being able to manage and operate your entertainment centre remotely is only one of the possibilities. The availability of remote controls for opening and closing of blinds and curtains, switches for electrical equipment such as ovens, lights, cooking appliance and washing machines, is essential. For people who cannot easily answer the door there is a keyless door entry system designed to fit most latch locks which enable the elderly, the disabled and partially sighted who have difficulty using keys, to manage their security remotely.

One story I read in the paper a few weeks ago was of a young man who was so obese, in the region of forty stone, that he could not move out of his bed. He had an entertainment centre in his room remotely controlled and he ordered food online to be delivered to his house. There were three healthcare workers in attendance at all times to turn him in bed and see to his bodily needs; as well as people to make for him the food he had ordered. He was waiting for a stomach operation to staple his stomach together to reduce his intake of food. And all this was paid for by the tax payer. My feeling was that if there was no one to take such good care of him he would soon lose weight because he would not be able to get about and eat all that food.

Conclusion

For the infants who were born with a physical disability, may never know what it is like to be completely mobile and they may constantly yearn to live an ordinary life. For those who were once completely functional, when they become disabled they have to come to terms with their loss and confront up to their own mortality. If the time comes when you are no longer able to do all the things you used to do, then be sure there are many imaginative devices to help you sustain as much independence as possible.

The Big Cheese Ultrasonic Cat Repeller Review Site
Jan 27th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

Safeguard your garden environment. There are 9 million cats in britain. The mammal society says cats kill around 275 million prey items a year, among them 55 million birds. Voles and other small mammals constitute much of the rest. The Big Cheese Ultrasonic Cat Repeller can help safeguard your garden habitat and encourage wildlife and birds back into it.

The Big Cheese Cat Repeller incorporates a sophisticated PIR (Passive Infra Red) detection system, which constantly monitors a fan shaped area of a 98 degrees arc up to a distance of 12 metres. The protected area is over 120sq. meters of unobstructed space. The Sonic Cat Repeller detects animals moving into this area and triggers a burst of continuously variable ultrasound, which sweeps a frequency range of 18,000Hz, 24,000 Hz to repel them.

Simultaneously the LED indicator on the front of unit indicates that it is now activated. The Big Cheese Cat Repellent is powered by not one but two 9V alkaline batteries. Battery power is conserved because of the PIR detection system, which allows the unit to remain on stand-by between activation periods, therefore increasing battery lifespan.

A mains adapter can also be available, it’s sold separately The Push off and on Test Button on the face of the unit will drop the sonic frequency to an audible range. This makes it possible for you to make sure all of the unit is functioning properly and to hear the swept frequency. The product is additionally weather proof.

I Just Want My Scalp To Stop Itching NOW!
Jan 27th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

I’m here, I had itchy head itchy scalp so badly that all the white flakes on my shoulders from scratching would have had Bing Crosby singing I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas if he got within ten feet of me. And to make matters worse I could literally see my hair getting thinner before my eyes.

So, I go to my doctor and ask is there anything and I mean anything at all you can give me to keep my hair in? And of course Mr. Smart Aleck hands me a shoe box. Yeah right, thanks a lot.

What is it with me and Doctors? I mean years ago I’m having my vasectomy. No joke I’m laying on the table he’s cutting away, I’m as nervous as a cat that just jumped off a roof into a dog pound. The next thing I know I see smoke and he says oops! Of course it was a joke, but I’m telling you, at the time it was not funny.

So anyway I have itchy head itchy scalp like mad. I’m literally scouring the internet, going to health food stores calling anyone who even acts like they care, trying to find a solution any solution.

Why? Because if you have itchy scalp you know what I was going through. It can dang near drive you crazy at times. And as you know it always seems to itch at the worst possible times. Like when you’re on your very 1st date with someone you think might actually have potential. Or at a big Job interview for a job you actually would like to have. Of course, that’s when it decides to itch.
You know what I mean, when the itching starts you don’t care you just want it to stop, you just want to find a solution.

Plus me being a guy I sure as heck don’t want to lose my hair on top of it. Of course my loving wife was very nurturing and reassuring about the whole thing. She said “oh don’t worry if you go bald we’ll just sell all your turtle neck sweaters at out next yard sale”. Of course I bought into it hook line and sinker and replied “why would we do that?” And her reply “so you don’t look like a huge roll on deodorant”

With her comment in my back pocket I knew I was at my whit’s end and needed a solution that actually worked.

My research led me to the conclusion that my problem was actually caused by the inflammation from all the chemicals that were in my shampoo & conditioner that I was currently using. So I searched far and wide for any shampoo and conditioners that didn’t have any of the toxic chemicals that were causing my problem in the 1st place.

Like I said I went to health food stores, pharmacy’s you name it I went. At one store this blonde lady was so incredibly dense that I kept thinking I should design my own hair care product. Yep you got it, it would be black hair coloring to turn blondes into brunettes and the name of the product of course would be Artificial Intelligence!

After tons and tons of searching and trying all manner of things I finally found one product line that actually works. And I don’t have itchy head itchy scalp any longer. The reason it does is just like I said, it alpdoesn’t have the toxic chemicals that cause your problem in the 1st place.

Plus, my hair looks like I just stepped out of a Salon. Yeah right I heard that on a TV commercial, but my hair does look a whole lot better than it has in years that’s for sure.

What Are The Benefits Of Possessing A Metal Swing Set Compared To A Wooden Swing Set?
Jan 26th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

When you are deciding about a play set for your backyard, there are a number of points to keep in mind. Robustness, outlay, and safety are the most focal. Shoppers can usually select between wood, metal, and plastic swing equipment. Plastic is the safest, but it’s only suitable for very young infants, and does not weather well. Wood is now and then thought to be more appealing, but has a heavy price tag. The well known metal swing set, though, scores sound on all three indicators, so long as you are careful.

Metal swing sets are regarded by most to be the most durable option within the marketplace. Although, it’s essential to pay for a quality set, finished from galvanized steel that won’t rust. Everyday steel that has just been painted to retard rust will worsen if the paint coat is damaged. Sets that don’t advertise galvanized steel are also usually of lower quality. There are lots of different shapes and sizes of metal swing set. A number of them include slides, monkey bars, and other fun toys, whilst others have only basic swings.

Of late, wooden swing sets have gotten far more popular. These playground constructions present the possibility for children to play near their own homes, safely, and for parents to maintain an eye on them. They are in addition visually beautiful, robust, and amusing. As previous models were to some extent dangerous, new improvements to wooden swing sets and play accessories, such as plastic slides, coated chains, and well finished wood that helps kids steer clear of splinters makes a wooden swing set a plausible alternative. However, there are plenty of styles on the market, and picking could be difficult. There is more to selecting a wooden swing set than simply purchasing the first set that looks attractive.

Computer
Jan 26th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

Is it better to have a pc or a mac? So me personally I have a pc. I have some friends that have mac’s. Is one really better than the other? I do not know that I am convinced. Let us break it down for a second. I personally do not know a whole lot about mac’s. I do know that roughly 70% or more of the working world and everyone else uses the pc. That does not necessarily make one better than the other. I do know that I have heard that a mac can not get a virus. This I can tell you from first hand experience is not true. I have a friend that got one so I can tell you for a certainty that it is not the case. I think people just sometimes do not want to admit that maybe it is just a matter of preference. Do I have a bias opinion? I do not know. I do know that I have no intention of switching to a mac. I am comfortable with what I have. So, why would I want to learn something new if I do not have to. My pc does what I need it to do. If you have a mac and you are happy good for you. I really do think that it is a matter of preference. One is not better than the other in my opinion it just comes down to what you want to use.

Self confidence, with a few simple anyone can get it.
Jan 26th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

Although many of the factors affecting self confidence are beyond our control, it is not a valid reason for you to give up, there are so many self confidence techniques out there you just need to find the ones that work for you. Recalling your past successes, unique skills, loving relationships, and positive momentum are good confidence boosting. You will be amazed at how much you have going for you and it will motivate you to take that next step towards a better you.

Self confidence is all about feeling comfortable with yourself and not allowing what other people think of you to affect you; you should only care about what you think of yourself. Self confidence really helps with many different aspects of your life. A lot of the times, the lack of self confidence is a feeling of not having enough of something, whether it’s emotional validation, good luck, money, love etc.

Learn to do anything to reach that goal and you will see how that inner feeling of self confidence comes to you. Learning how to endure in the wilderness of life will build confidence in other areas of your life too. What I am trying to get at here is being out in the world will help build self confidence, shying away from the world will just deepen the despair.

Building of self confidence is different from person to person. I find exercise one of the best ways to clear the mind and stop the over thinking that causes lack of confidences. Having the discipline to work out not only makes you feel better, it creates positive momentum that you can build on the rest of the day. Doing exercise every day helps to build a better self-view of yourself and in turn will boost your confidences.

The first step towards good self confidences is to start accepting yourself for who you are and not to worry about what others think of you. Self confidence and self esteem are very closely linked, that is why a large amount of the time our confidence is based on our emotions and how we feel about ourselves rather than how confident we are. Building your self-esteem and self confidence is the single most important part of your entire well-being.

If you learn anything from this article please let it be this. Self confidence is about being yourself; you should not compare yourself to anyone else. You alone determine how you live your life not someone else’s view of you. Stop the over thinking and start the doing today, trust me my friend that confidence is closer than you think.

What Are The Top Ways To Make Money
Jan 26th, 2010 by Lucy Katts

Need money for your college education? Or just some extra funds to add to your allowance? You are probably asking, what are the top ways to make money online while staying in school at the same time? Here are some answers:

Take up Freelance Writing Jobs
The demand for solid and professionally written articles for online publishing has been on a steady rise since the launch of Google and article marketing. If you take time to search the Internet, you will stumble upon sites that offer a few bucks for a set of articles. The good thing about freelance writing is that you earn according to the amount of effort that you give into it, so that if you turn in assignments quick, you can get more assignments and earn more than the rest. Also, the topics are usually easy and resources abound in the Internet. If you know your way around the world wide web, you will find things to be pretty easy.

Be a Virtual Assistant
The big companies, especially those that market consumer goods, receive a lot of emails from all over the world every day. Ever wonder how they manage their inboxes? Simple: they hire virtual assistants whose job is to open their inboxes, read their emails, and file or sort out the mails according to topic, relevance and urgency. Sounds like a no-brainer? Go for it!

Make Money Taking Surveys
This is where you have to be really careful. While there are legitimate Internet marketing companies that do pay survey respondents, there are others who are only out to pick your brains, get you to give them your personal information, and don’t give you anything in return. If you want to try out earning by taking online surveys, be sure to research on possible websites or marketers that are safe to deal with.

Sell Stuff on Ebay
There are lots of ways to make money on ebay, sell your own stuff or sell other people’s stuff and get commissions out of closed deals. You probably already know how Ebay works. Some of those who have capital to spend find great deals or buy stuff wholesale and resell them on Ebay. Sounds like fun? It sure is.

Do Jury Duty—Virtually
If you think lawyers were born with perfect grandstanding skills, you are totally wrong. They don’t go to court without practicing their spiel. And just how do they do that? They stage mock trials before online jurors, whom they pay an average of $5 to $60 depending on how complicated the case to be heard is.

Be an Online Tutor or Give Webinars
You know things that others don’t. It could be expertise in MS Excel or in World of Warcraft or flower arrangement what have you. But remember that there will always be someone who will be interested to learn whatever you know. Work up a teaching module and explore how you can get people to sign up for an online course. Then follow through with online marketing tools like email blasts or social networking groups.

These are a few ways to make money fast, there are literally thousands of variations and methods that you can use.
